What It Is?
- Ammannia telanganensis is an annual, herbaceous, semi-aquatic flowering plant belonging to the Lythraceae (loosestrife) family. It represents a newly classified species within the genus Ammannia, a group of wetland-adapted herbs found in tropical and subtropical freshwater habitats.
Habitat & Phenology:
- Ecosystem: Grows in wet, sandy soils along seasonal streams, temporary puddles, and marshy margins of freshwater bodies.
- Geographical Distribution: Documented in Rangareddy district (Narsingi and Gachibowli) and Nagarkurnool district (Vatwarlapalle in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve).
- Associated Flora: Co-exists alongside other wetland and aquatic herbs such as Ammannia multiflora and various Rotala species.
- Flowering & Fruiting Period: Occurs post-monsoon through winter, specifically from November to February.
Key Characters of the Species:
- Pedunculate Inflorescence: Features distinct stalked flower clusters (pedunculate cymes), which clearly separates it from close relatives that bear sessile (unstalked) flowers.
- Prominent Magenta Petals: Possesses four conspicuous, bright magenta-colored petals, unlike related species such as Ammannia cordata, which are characteristically apetalous (lacking petals).
- Brain-Like (Cerebriform) Seed Coat: The surface microstructure of the seed coat (testa) displays an unusual cerebriform pattern (resembling the folds of a brain), providing a definitive microscopic diagnostic marker.
- Distinctive Bract & Foliar Morphology: Exhibits specialized leaf and bract configurations adapted to fluctuating water levels in shallow riparian habitats.
- Small Ecological Range: Currently meets localized criteria for an Endangered threshold under specific IUCN metrics, though formally designated as Data Deficient (DD) pending broader field surveys.

- Clarifies the 1834 Ammannia cordata anomaly, suggesting historical Hyderabad specimens were likely misidentified A. telanganensis.
