Bharat Forge Ltd. and Pratt & Whitney Canada announced a collaboration on 15 September 2026 to evaluate the integration of advanced turboprop engines into a High-Altitude, Long-Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programme developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The partnership covers engine compatibility, performance assessment, and installation requirements for the DRDO HALE UAV.
High-Altitude, Long-Endurance UAVs
HALE UAVs are unmanned aircraft designed for operations at high altitudes and for long-duration missions. They are used for surveillance, intelligence, and reconnaissance over land and maritime domains. HALE platforms are classified by their endurance profile and operational altitude, and they are relevant to strategic and border-area monitoring.
Engine-Airframe Integration
Bharat Forge, headquartered in Pune, will lead engine-airframe integration for the programme. This work includes installation design and systems interfaces, which are technical links between the propulsion system, airframe structure, and onboard subsystems. Pratt & Whitney Canada will assess the suitability of its turboprop engines for the platform.
India’s Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Base
Bharat Forge operates in advanced engineering, manufacturing, and aerospace systems. The collaboration is linked to India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes self-reliance in strategic sectors, including unmanned aerial systems and defence manufacturing. Private-sector participation in aerospace programmes includes design support, precision manufacturing, and propulsion integration.
Important Facts for Exams
- DRDO is India’s premier defence research agency under the Ministry of Defence.
- HALE stands for High-Altitude, Long-Endurance, a UAV class used for extended missions.
- Turboprop engines combine a gas turbine with a propeller and are used in aircraft that need efficient low- to medium-speed performance.
- Pune is a major industrial and engineering hub in Maharashtra.
Unmanned aerial vehicles are classified by endurance, altitude, and mission profile. Defence UAV programmes in India often involve public-private collaboration for propulsion, avionics, and airframe development.
