Odisha-based BonV Aero supplied 45 heavy-payload Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to the Indian Army’s Eastern Command on 28 September 2026. The UAVs are meant for tactical logistics and mission-specific operations in Northeast India, where terrain, weather, and limited road access affect surface movement.
Logistics UAVs in Military Supply Chains
Logistics UAVs are unmanned aircraft used to carry supplies, equipment, and mission payloads to operational locations. In military use, they support transport in high-altitude posts, forested areas, riverine belts, and regions affected by landslides or floods.
- Heavy-payload UAVs are designed to carry larger loads than standard surveillance drones.
- Military logistics drones are used for delivery of rations, ammunition, medical supplies, and spare parts.
- High-altitude operations require drones with stable flight systems, stronger batteries, and weather resistance.
Eastern Command and Northeast Terrain
The Indian Army’s Eastern Command is responsible for operational areas in eastern India and parts of the Himalayan frontier. Northeast India includes difficult terrain, dense forests, river systems, and mountain routes where road connectivity can be disrupted by monsoon floods and landslides.
High-altitude Himalayan posts often face low temperatures, thin air, and severe weather conditions. These factors make aerial logistics useful for time-sensitive supply movement in remote military locations.
BonV Aero and Defence Drone Development
BonV Aero has conducted drone operations and trials for the Army at Tawang, Siliguri, Dimapur, Kargil, Dras, Nyoma, Baramulla, and Kupwara. The company has also trained more than 150 Army personnel on its systems within the Northern Command.
The company is developing an ultra-heavy payload, high-altitude drone capable of carrying over 100 kilograms to altitudes above 10,000 feet and distances exceeding 100 kilometres. Such specifications place the platform in the military logistics drone segment.
Important Facts for Exams
- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are also called drones and are used in surveillance, logistics, and combat support roles.
- The Indian Army has separate operational commands, including Eastern Command and Northern Command.
- Tawang, Kargil, Dras, Nyoma, Baramulla, and Kupwara are important military locations in high-altitude border regions.
- The Ministry of Defence issued a tender for 2,715 logistics drones, which is linked to wider military modernisation.
Defence Procurement and Future Use
The Ministry of Defence recently issued a tender for 2,715 logistics drones. BonV Aero’s supply forms part of the wider use of aerial mobility systems in military logistics across mountainous regions of India.
