Exercise Udara Shakti 2026
Context: The Indian Air Force (IAF) concluded its participation in Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia following its deployment at Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia.

About Exercise Udara Shakti 2026:
What It Is?
- Exercise Udara Shakti is a biennial bilateral tactical air combat exercise conducted between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). It provides a dedicated operational platform for both air forces to rehearse complex aerial maneuvers, dissimilar air combat training (DACT), and joint mission planning.
Host Country: Malaysia.
Participating Nations: India (IAF) and Malaysia (RMAF).
Aim: To strengthen defence cooperation, tactical interoperability, joint air-combat capabilities and operational flexibility across the Indo-Pacific.
Key Features of Exercise Udara Shakti 2026:
- Dissimilar Aircraft Combat Training (DACT): Pitched French-origin IAF Rafale fighters against Malaysian Russian-origin Su-30MKM Flankers and American-built F/A-18D Hornet strike fighters, testing multi-origin combat tactics.
- Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE): Featured structured exchanges between specialists on operational planning, flight safety protocols, electronic warfare countermeasures, and maintenance procedures.
- Strategic Airlift & Logistical Interoperability: Integrated heavy strategic transport aircraft—including the IAF’s C-17 Globemaster III and the RMAF’s Airbus A400M Atlas—for expeditionary logistics and rapid asset turnaround.
- Seamless Post-Pitch Black Trans-Deployment: Demonstrated the IAF’s extended operational reach and logistical autonomy by ferrying frontline fighter squadrons directly from northern Australia to Southeast Asia without returning to base.
Significance:
- ASEAN Defence Ties: Deepens India’s defence cooperation and strategic engagement with Southeast Asia.
- Cross-Fleet Technical Synergy: Shared Su-30 platforms enable India and Malaysia to exchange operational, maintenance and technical expertise.
