The Odisha Forest Department rescued five young orangutans from the Ranakotha Protected Reserved Forest in the Bhograi block of Balasore district on 8 September 2026. The rescued primates included three males and two females, and officials transferred them to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar for quarantine and care.
Orangutans as a primate species
Orangutans are great apes of the genus Pongo and are native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in South-East Asia. They are classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, and India does not have a natural wild population of orangutans.
Wildlife trafficking and enforcement agencies
The Odisha state government requested the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau to investigate the smuggling route used to bring the primates into India. The Special Task Force of the Odisha Crime Branch joined the probe on 9 September 2026 and reviewed CCTV footage at airports, ports, and railway stations.

Odisha forest administration and animal care
Regional Chief Conservator of Forests Prakash Chand Gogineni confirmed the composition of the rescued group on 8 September 2026. Balasore Divisional Forest Officer Pratik Prakash Indalkar stated that four animals were eating and in good health, while veterinarians treated one for mild dehydration.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha announced that quarantine arrangements were made at Nandankanan Zoological Park. Officials also noted that the animals were non-native to India and could have entered the country through an international trafficking network.
