Google has launched India-first artificial intelligence models for agriculture through Google DeepMind’s AnthroKrishi team. The two models are Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) and Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED), and they are designed to generate field-level agricultural intelligence.
Agricultural Landscape Understanding
Agricultural Landscape Understanding, or ALU, is an AI model that processes spatial and farm-related data to identify agricultural land patterns. It is used for field-level mapping, land analysis, and digital agriculture applications. The model provides granular data through application programming interfaces, or APIs.
Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection
Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection, or AMED, is an AI model that tracks agricultural changes and event-based signals. It is used with ALU for monitoring crop conditions, land use changes, and farm events at scale. Both models are part of Google’s India-first agricultural intelligence framework.
Integration, Expansion and Use Cases
The data generated by ALU and AMED has been integrated into Google Earth as a visual data layer. Google has also expanded these models to Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Rwanda, Nigeria and Zambia after testing them with partners in the Asia-Pacific region. CarbonFarm has used the ALU API and Gemini for low-carbon rice cultivation, with a target of 2 million hectares by 2030. TerraStack, an IIT Bombay-incubated startup, has used the APIs to map more than 140 million hectares of farmland. Karnataka’s Water Resources Department has used the data for water management across 2.6 million hectares of irrigated land. The Agricultural Data Exchange, or ADeX, in Telangana has used the models for digital agriculture services.
Important Facts for Exams
- Google DeepMind is the artificial intelligence research division of Google.
- Google Earth is a geospatial platform used for visualising maps and satellite-based layers.
- APIs, or application programming interfaces, allow software systems to exchange data automatically.
- Gemini is Google’s generative artificial intelligence model family.
Digital Agriculture Applications
ALU and AMED are relevant to precision agriculture, land-record modernisation, irrigation planning and crop monitoring. Such AI systems use geospatial data, remote sensing inputs and automated event detection for agricultural decision-making.
