India and Uzbekistan elevated their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on 30 August 2026 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Tashkent. The two countries also set a target of USD 5 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030 and agreed on a long-term framework for uranium supply from Uzbekistan for India’s civil nuclear energy sector.
India-Uzbekistan Bilateral Relations
India and Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Uzbekistan is a landlocked Central Asian republic and a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, while India maintains engagement with the region through connectivity, energy, and security cooperation.
Trade, Energy and Defence Cooperation
The current bilateral trade between India and Uzbekistan is over USD 1 billion, and the 2030 target represents a fivefold increase. The two sides agreed to promote joint development, direct industry linkages, and co-production of military hardware under defence cooperation.
Uranium is a key nuclear fuel used in civil nuclear reactors, and Uzbekistan is among the important uranium-producing countries in Central Asia. India’s civil nuclear energy sector uses imported uranium under international safeguards and domestic regulatory frameworks.
Cultural and Institutional Linkages
Multiple Memorandums of Understanding were signed in mining, Ayurveda, tourism, higher education, and environmental protection. A Letter of Intent was also signed for the restoration and conservation of the Buddhist heritage sites of Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa in Uzbekistan.
Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa are archaeological Buddhist sites associated with the spread of Buddhism along the Silk Route in Central Asia. Such sites are relevant for the study of ancient trans-Asian cultural exchanges.
Honour and State Recognition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Oliy Darajali Do’stlik Order, which is Uzbekistan’s highest state honour for foreign leaders. State honours of this type are awarded by governments for diplomatic, cultural, or strategic contributions.
