India and China reached an eight-point consensus during the 25th Round of Talks between the Special Representatives on the Boundary Question in Beijing on 25 August 2026. The talks were co-chaired by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Special Representatives’ Talks on the Boundary Question
The Special Representatives’ mechanism is a bilateral diplomatic format used by India and China for boundary-related discussions. The 25th round was held in Beijing, which is the capital of China and a major venue for high-level diplomatic meetings.
Boundary Management and the Line of Actual Control
The eight-point consensus covered peace and tranquillity along border areas and sought to reduce friction along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The LAC is the de facto boundary between India and China and is not a formally demarcated international border.
The two sides agreed to use existing diplomatic and military channels to address ground situations promptly. These channels include local commander-level meetings, which are used for communication between field formations on both sides.
Working Mechanisms and Military Communication
The agreement assigned work to the Expert Group on Boundary Delimitation and the Working Group on Border Management under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC). The WMCC is a bilateral institutional mechanism for consultation on border affairs.
The joint statement also mentioned two additional military meeting points for General Level Mechanism and Senior Highest Military Commander meetings. It also provided for two new border military hotlines in the Eastern and Middle Sectors.
