India repatriated a rescued Sumatran baby orangutan to Indonesia on 19 October 2026. Rescued in India in November 2024, the animal received veterinary care and appropriate habitat facilities from Indian wildlife authorities before its return from Gujarat. The operation involved wildlife protection agencies and the CITES Management Authorities of both countries.
International Wildlife Trade Regulation
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES, is an international agreement adopted in 1973 and in force since 1975. It regulates international trade in listed wild animals and plants through a system of appendices and permits. CITES Appendix I includes species threatened with extinction; international commercial trade in these species is generally prohibited, subject to limited exceptions. The orangutan arrived at Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where officials from the Consulate General of India attended a reception organised by Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry. The Government of India waived the historical costs of the animal’s care and maintenance before repatriation.
Orangutan Biology and Conservation Status
Orangutans are great apes in the family Hominidae and genus “Pongo”. The three recognised species are the Sumatran orangutan (“Pongo abelii”), Bornean orangutan (“Pongo pygmaeus”) and Tapanuli orangutan (“Pongo tapanuliensis”). The Sumatran orangutan is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Orangutans are primarily arboreal and feed mainly on fruit.
Wildlife Rescue and Repatriation
Indonesia has also sought the return of five baby orangutans, estimated to be about one-and-a-half years old, found motherless in Odisha’s Balasore district in September 2026. They are being cared for at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. Their origin is preliminarily believed to be Sumatran, but confirmation and completion of required procedures are pending. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has communicated with the Indian Government through the Indian Embassy in Jakarta. Indonesian wildlife experts are scheduled to visit India in November 2026 to facilitate the five animals’ repatriation.
