The Indian Army has set up AASHVAST, a software analysis and validation laboratory at the Directorate General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (DG EME) headquarters in New Delhi. The facility is designed to scan military drones and other electronic systems for hidden software threats, unauthorised components, and security vulnerabilities.
AASHVAST Acronym and Purpose
AASHVAST stands for Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats. The laboratory examines drone firmware and related electronics for backdoors, embedded credentials, altered flight limits, hidden remote-access tools, and secret command paths.
Technical Features of the Lab
The AASHVAST facility operates as a completely air-gapped system and functions entirely offline. It works as a read-only environment, which prevents external modification and blocks writing of data onto the defence hardware under test.
The laboratory also checks whether defence systems accept only manufacturer-approved updates. It can assess how drones respond to GPS spoofing and jamming, which are electronic warfare techniques used to disrupt navigation signals.
Institutional and Operational Context
The software analysis and validation suite for the DG EME was developed by QuickPay Tech under the direction of Rajib Roy. The facility was inaugurated at Delhi Cantonment by Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth on 14 August 2026.
The DG EME is the Indian Army’s technical organisation for electronics and mechanical engineering support. Its functions include maintenance, repair, and technical evaluation of military equipment and electronic systems.
Important Facts for Exams
- Air-gapped systems are not connected to external networks, including the internet, for security reasons.
- Firmware is the embedded software that controls hardware functions in devices such as drones.
- GPS spoofing and jamming are common electronic warfare methods used to interfere with navigation systems.
- Atmanirbhar Bharat is a Government of India initiative linked with self-reliance in strategic sectors, including defence.
Defence Security and Indigenous Systems
Military drone security includes checks for hardware integrity, software authenticity, and supply-chain risks. Defence laboratories in India also examine whether imported or locally assembled systems contain unauthorised chips, code, or communication pathways.
