The Indian Embassy in Jakarta launched an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar named Dewi in October 2026 for public outreach. The virtual guide is designed to share information on Indian culture, travel, scholarships, business, investment opportunities and consular services.
Dewi and the Embassy’s Outreach
Dewi is intended to provide updates to people following the embassy’s public channels. Its stated purpose includes improving access to embassy services and strengthening engagement between India and Indonesia. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty announced the initiative on the social media platform X. He introduced Dewi in connection with Navaratri and Durga Puja, describing the launch as taking place on an auspicious occasion. The embassy invited users to follow its account and greet the avatar.
Name and Language Context
“Dewi” means “goddess” in Indonesian. The name connects the avatar’s public identity with a word used in Indonesia and with the festive context of its introduction. Navaratri is a Hindu festival observed over nine nights in honour of the goddess in her various forms. Durga Puja is a Hindu festival centred on the worship of Goddess Durga and is particularly associated with West Bengal and other parts of eastern India. The timing of Dewi’s introduction was linked to these festivals in the ambassador’s announcement.
Artificial Intelligence in Public Services
An AI avatar is a digital character that uses artificial intelligence technologies to interact with users or provide information. Public-facing digital assistants can be designed to answer queries, direct users to service information and communicate through online platforms. Dewi’s announced information areas include cultural content, travel guidance, scholarship details, business and investment opportunities, and consular services. Consular services generally include assistance to citizens abroad and services relating to visas, passports and other travel documents. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has advocated responsible discussion of artificial intelligence and its effects. Governments and public institutions use digital channels to disseminate service information and communicate with users.
