India’s Helping Hand Across the Himalayas
Anecdote: When devastating flash floods swept through Nepal’s border region with Tibet, rivers turned into torrents and entire communities were caught in a humanitarian crisis. More than 170 people lost their lives, while homes and essential infrastructure were devastated. Amid the destruction, India responded as a neighbour bound not merely by geography, but by deep social and humanitarian ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah and assured all possible humanitarian assistance. Within hours, India dispatched its first tranche of 10 tonnes of HADR supplies.
The assistance quickly gathered momentum. On August 27, a military transport aircraft departed with another 37.5 tonnes of relief material, medicines and food packets. Temporary shelters offered protection to displaced families, blankets provided warmth, while hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines addressed immediate survival needs. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasised that India remained in continuous coordination with Nepalese authorities and would continue supporting relief operations. More supplies were also expected as rescue and rehabilitation progressed.
The response illustrates how foreign policy acquires meaning when strategic partnerships translate into human solidarity during crises. For India, Nepal is not simply a neighbouring State but an integral partner within its immediate neighbourhood. Rapid HADR assistance strengthens trust, reinforces India’s Neighbourhood First approach and demonstrates its capacity to act as a regional first responder. In moments when Himalayan borders become pathways of disaster, they can also become bridges of compassion, cooperation and shared resilience.
