Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri arrived at Busan Naval Harbour in the Republic of Korea on 26 October 2026 for the India-Republic of Korea Navy (IN-RoKN) Bilateral Exercise. The exercise involves the Indian Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN), and includes activities in harbour and at sea.
INS Sahyadri and the Indian Navy
INS Sahyadri is a Shivalik-class guided missile stealth frigate of the Indian Navy. The Shivalik class comprises multi-role frigates built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. INS Sahyadri was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2012. A guided missile frigate is a surface combatant equipped to operate with missile systems. The Indian Navy uses frigates for maritime operations, including surveillance and the protection of naval forces. INS Sahyadri’s visit to Busan forms part of its participation in the bilateral naval exercise.
Harbour and Sea Phases
The harbour phase includes professional interactions between personnel of the two navies, cross-deck visits, cross-training activities and sporting events. A cross-deck visit involves personnel visiting a ship operated by the other navy. The commanding officer of INS Sahyadri is scheduled to meet senior RoKN officials. Harbour activities will be followed by coordinated maritime activities at sea involving INS Sahyadri and ROKS Munmu the Great. Naval exercises at sea can involve coordinated ship movements and other activities conducted by participating forces. The exercise’s stated purpose is to strengthen maritime cooperation and enhance interoperability in the Indo-Pacific.
India–Republic of Korea Naval Exercise
The 2026 exercise is the second edition of the IN-RoKN Bilateral Exercise. Its first edition took place in October 2025 in Busan and also involved INS Sahyadri. The Indo-Pacific refers to the interconnected Indian and Pacific Ocean regions and their surrounding areas.
