Israel’s “Sufa 53” project, also called “Great Storm” or the “Sufa Line,” is an Israeli engineering and military undertaking in the southern Quneitra countryside of Syria. The project involves a fortified military route, observation posts, trenches, and earthen berms along the separation line near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Location and Route
The project began in mid-2022 near Hader in northern Quneitra and was extended through Jubata al-Khashab, Al-Hamidiyah, Qahtaniyah, Bir Ajam, Bariqa, and Al-Asha. The route moves towards the slopes of Mount Hermon and the tri-border area where the Syrian, Jordanian, and Israeli boundaries meet.
Engineering Features
- The military road is approximately 8 metres wide.
- The project includes deep trenches and earth berms up to 5 metres high.
- The fortifications also include observation posts and military positions.
- Military bulldozers and heavy equipment have been used for excavation and expansion work.
Legal and Security Context
The 1974 Disengagement Agreement created a ceasefire and separation framework between Israel and Syria after the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. The area of separation in southern Syria is monitored by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, which was established in 1974 to supervise the ceasefire line on the Golan front.
Regional Reactions and Local Impact
Syria has described the project as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and international law. Syrian accounts state that Israeli troops have moved 300 to 1,000 metres into the area of separation in some locations, and local communities have lost agricultural land because of the construction.
