ISRO announced on 22 October 2026 that it plans to launch NVS-03 on 30 October 2026. The indigenous navigation satellite will lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota aboard a GSLV Mk II rocket.
Navigation Satellites and Launch Vehicle
NVS-03 is the third satellite in the second-generation Navigation Satellite (NVS) series and the twelfth satellite in the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), known as NavIC. The launch was initially targeted for 15–20 October 2026. The mission had earlier been scheduled for late 2025; the revised schedule followed a cautious approach by ISRO after recent PSLV setbacks. The GSLV Mk II, or Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark II, is a three-stage launch vehicle developed by ISRO. Its stages use solid, liquid and cryogenic propulsion systems. The vehicle will carry NVS-03 into orbit.
NavIC System and Services
NavIC is India’s regional satellite navigation system. It provides positioning, navigation and timing services over India and an area extending about 1,500 kilometres beyond its boundary. Its services include a Standard Positioning Service for civilian users and a Restricted Service for authorised users. IRNSS is the formal name of the satellite system, while NavIC is its operational name. The NVS series forms part of the second-generation replenishment of the NavIC constellation. Ageing satellites and technical issues have affected the system’s standalone positioning service. NVS-03 is intended to support restoration of that service.
Satellite Payload and Atomic Clock
NVS-03 has a launch mass of 2,232 kilograms and a planned mission duration of 12 years. It carries an indigenous Rubidium atomic clock developed by the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad. Atomic clocks provide precise time measurements used in satellite navigation to calculate a receiver’s position. The use of an Indian-developed clock addresses reliance on imported clocks in earlier navigation satellites. Precise timing is required to measure the travel time of navigation signals between satellites and receivers.
Important Facts for Exams:
- NavIC provides a Standard Positioning Service and a Restricted Service.
- IRNSS is the full name of the satellite system known as NavIC.
- The Satish Dhawan Space Centre is located at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
- GSLV Mk II uses a cryogenic upper stage.
NVS-03 is the twelfth satellite in the IRNSS/NavIC series. ISRO scheduled its launch from Sriharikota for 30 October 2026.
