Land Subsidence
Context: In Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district, rampant underground and open-cast soapstone mining has triggered severe land subsidence, widening ground fissures and damaging hundreds of homes across vulnerable villages.

About Land Subsidence:
What It Is?
- Land subsidence is the gradual settling, sinking, or sudden downward collapse of the Earth’s surface due to the subsurface movement, compaction, or removal of earth materials (such as water, minerals, oil, or soluble rocks).
How It Happens?
- Subsurface Depletion: Extraction of subsurface fluids (groundwater, crude oil, gas) or physical excavation (mining, tunneling) creates subterranean voids and pressure deficits.
- Loss of Hydrostatic Support: When water is withdrawn from fine-grained sediment layers (aquitards/clays), the pore-water pressure that previously supported the overarching weight drops significantly.
- Compaction & Grain Realignment: The overburden weight shifts entirely onto the soil skeleton, causing fine-grained sediments to compress, lose pore spaces, and compact permanently.
- Surface Deformation: This subsurface compaction manifests on the surface as regional sinking, differential settlement, or deep tension fissures.
Key Factors Causing Land Subsidence:
- Excessive Groundwater Extraction: The single largest human driver globally, leading to irreversible aquifer-system compaction.
- Unregulated Mining & Subsurface Voids: Underground and steep open-cast mining—such as soapstone extraction in Uttarakhand or coal mining in Dhanbad—removes foundational rock masses and leaves unstable voids that collapse under gravity.
- Disrupted Drainage & Slope Hydro-Pressure: Blocking natural drainage channels with mining waste traps water, elevating pore pressure within hill slopes and triggering progressive slope failure, landslides, and subsidence.
- Natural & Geotechnical Causes: Dissolution of soluble rocks, oxidation and drainage of organic soils/wetlands, thawing permafrost, and natural tectonic settling.
Implications:
- Uneven land settlement cracks buildings, damages roads and railways, and ruptures underground water, sewage and gas pipelines.
- Aquifer compression permanently reduces groundwater storage, while land subsidence increases flooding and coastal saltwater intrusion.
