NASA’s Perseverance rover set a record for the longest distance driven by a vehicle on another world, reaching 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometres) on Mars by 11 October 2026. It surpassed the previous record of 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometres), set by NASA’s Opportunity rover during its 2004–2018 mission.
Mars rover mobility records
Perseverance covered the record distance in approximately five and a half years. Opportunity took nearly 15 years to travel a similar distance. On 14 June 2026, Perseverance completed a marathon-equivalent journey of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometres) on the Martian surface. It reached that distance on its 1,890th Martian day, or sol. A sol is the time taken by Mars to complete one rotation relative to the Sun and lasts about 24 hours and 39 minutes.
Autonomous navigation on Mars
Perseverance uses an autonomous navigation system called AutoNav, which handles more than 90 per cent of the rover’s driving without direct human intervention. AutoNav enables the rover to assess terrain and select a route around obstacles. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) manages the Perseverance mission. Rover operations also involve planning and commands sent from Earth.
Jezero Crater mission objectives
Perseverance landed in Mars’ Jezero Crater on 18 February 2021. The crater contains an ancient river delta and lake-basin features. The rover is exploring the crater’s western rim, where scientists are investigating evidence of ancient hydrothermal systems that may have supported microbial life. The mission has been extended through approximately the end of 2028. Project manager Steven Lee stated that the rover’s systems remain healthy and capable of operating into the 2030s.
Important Facts for Exams
- Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is classified as a terrestrial planet.
- Jezero Crater is the landing site of NASA’s Perseverance rover.
- Opportunity was a NASA Mars Exploration Rover that operated on Mars from 2004 to 2018.
- Perseverance carries the Ingenuity helicopter, the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet.
Perseverance is part of NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, which launched on 30 July 2020. The rover collects and stores rock and soil samples for possible return to Earth by future missions.
