The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) launched RAINCHNNAI, a weather futures contract for Chennai’s Northeast monsoon. The contract is cash-settled, uses official rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and is linked to rainfall recorded at the Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam weather stations in Chennai.
Weather Derivatives
Weather derivatives are financial contracts whose value depends on measurable weather variables such as rainfall, temperature, or snowfall. They are used in risk management by sectors exposed to weather variability, including agriculture, logistics, retail, and utilities.
Chennai Northeast Monsoon
Chennai receives nearly 70% of its annual rainfall from the Northeast monsoon. The monsoon season in Tamil Nadu generally extends from October to December, and rainfall variability during this period affects urban water supply and related economic activity.
Contract Features of RAINCHNNAI
NCDEX stated that trading in RAINCHNNAI initially covers expiries in September, October, November, and December. The contract uses a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model to measure deviation from the Long Period Average (LPA), and it has a tick size of 1 millimetre with a maximum order lot size of 50 lots.

Monsoon Risk Management
Weather futures contracts are used to hedge losses caused by rainfall deviations from normal patterns. Chennai’s rainfall-linked contract extends weather risk management tools across the June-to-December monsoon cycle in India.
