On 15 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is inaugurating and dedicating five major development projects worth approximately ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh through video conferencing. The projects cover air and road connectivity, electricity infrastructure, archaeological heritage conservation and water security.
Transport Infrastructure in Ladakh
A new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is among the projects. Built at a cost of ₹640 crore, the terminal covers 23,800 square metres and is designed to handle 35 lakh passengers annually. It incorporates geothermal energy for improved energy efficiency. The 298-kilometre Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is also being dedicated. The route passes through the Zanskar Valley and provides an alternative road corridor to Ladakh. BRO is a road construction organisation under the Ministry of Defence, established in 1960. Ladakh became a Union Territory on 31 October 2019, following the reorganisation of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a high-altitude region in the northern part of India, with Leh as its largest town.
Energy and Water Infrastructure
The 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66 kV Double-Circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi Transmission Line are among the energy projects being inaugurated. Hydroelectric projects generate electricity from flowing or falling water, while transmission lines carry electricity between generating stations and distribution networks. The projects also include 40 water bodies developed under Project Him Sarovar. Water bodies can support water storage and conservation in regions where water availability is affected by arid conditions and seasonal precipitation.
Archaeological Heritage in Ladakh
India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park is being inaugurated at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. Petroglyphs are images or symbols carved into rock surfaces and are studied as archaeological evidence of past human activity. The park is intended to preserve ancient petroglyphs in the region.
