A 28-year-old laboratory technician, Darya Shipilova, died in early October 2026 after developing severe pneumonia at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Shelekhov, Russia. Her death led to medical observation or isolation for nearly 200 people in Shelekhov, while regional authorities introduced anti-epidemic measures and placed the district hospital under quarantine.
Anti-Plague Institutes in Russia
Anti-plague institutes are specialised public health laboratories that study plague and other dangerous infections. Russia has a network of such institutes under the country’s sanitary and epidemiological system, which has historical links to plague surveillance in Siberia and the Far East.
Plague and Pneumonia as Medical Terms
Plague is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or unknown agents, and the term “pneumonia of unknown etiology” is used when the cause is not identified.
Public Health Response and Quarantine Measures
Rospotrebnadzor stated that no microorganisms linked to Shipilova’s professional work were found in her body. Regional officials in Irkutsk held an emergency meeting with anti-epidemic authorities, cancelled public events in Irkutsk, and isolated identified contacts, all of whom reportedly tested negative and showed no symptoms.
