Exam Summary
On November 2, 2026, University of Washington researchers led by Samantha Gilbert-Janizek announced an Earth simulation tracing geochemical systems from formation to 500 million years ahead, excluding life. Published in The Planetary Science Journal on September 18, it predicts 19 properties and establishes an abiotic baseline for exoplanet biosignatures and the Habitable Worlds Observatory. On June 4, Stanford’s Michelle Hill introduced a model suggesting planets at least 80% Earth-size may retain atmospheres for 10 billion years; oxygen alone is not proof of life.
On November 2, 2026, University of Washington researchers announced a virtual Earth simulation designed to help identify life on other planets. Led by Samantha Gilbert-Janizek, the model traces Earth’s geochemical systems from its formation through about 500 million years into the future, excluding life’s influence.
A life-free baseline for exoplanets
The simulation predicted 19 planetary properties, including heat flow through the mantle, and can be adapted to model atmospheric evolution on rocky planets. Gilbert-Janizek, now a postdoctoral fellow at UC Riverside, said it could help assess whether observed atmospheric conditions indicate life on an exoplanet. The model is intended to provide an abiotic baseline for interpreting biosignatures and informing the design of proposed telescopes such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory. The research was published in The Planetary Science Journal on September 18, 2026.
A separate model examines smaller planets
On June 4, 2026, a team led by Michelle Hill of Stanford University’s Doerr School of Sustainability introduced the Smaller Than Earth Habitability Model. Published in The Planetary Science Journal, it uses planetary size and atmospheric characteristics to assess habitability. The model suggests that rocky planets at least 80% of Earth’s size could retain atmospheres for 10 billion years or more if they orbit within the habitable zones of Sun-like stars.
Important Facts for Exams
- Biosignature test: A candidate biosignature requires plausible non-biological explanations to be considered and eliminated; a suggestive signal alone is insufficient.
- Oxygen false positive: Atmospheric oxygen alone cannot establish life: abiotic photolysis can accumulate it when non-condensable gases are scarce or substantial water is lost.
- Geochemical box models: Geochemical box models represent reservoirs as compartments with inputs and outputs, simplifying the analysis of Earth-system cycles.
