Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) launched Custom System-on-Chip (SoC) Design Services on 17 September 2026 for automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and semiconductor ecosystem players. The service covers semiconductor engineering, Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) design, hardware-software co-design, and system validation for custom silicon development.
System-on-Chip in Electronics
A System-on-Chip is an integrated circuit that combines multiple electronic functions on a single chip. SoCs are used in consumer electronics, automotive systems, industrial devices, and communication equipment. In automotive applications, SoCs support advanced driver assistance, infotainment, connectivity, and vehicle control functions.
Software-Defined Vehicles
Software-defined vehicles (SDVs) are vehicles in which software controls major functions and features through electronic and computing platforms. SDV architecture uses centralised computing, over-the-air updates, and domain-based electronic control systems. Custom SoCs are used to match compute capacity with software requirements in such vehicles.
Semiconductor Design Stages
Silicon development includes architecture, design, implementation, software integration, verification, and validation. VLSI design refers to the process of creating integrated circuits with very large numbers of transistors on a single chip. Hardware-software co-design is a method in which chip hardware and embedded software are developed together for compatibility and performance.
Important Facts for Exams
- System-on-Chip is a single integrated circuit that combines processor, memory, and input-output functions.
- VLSI stands for Very Large-Scale Integration and is a core field in semiconductor engineering.
- Original Equipment Manufacturer is a company that produces vehicles or components under its own brand or for another brand.
- Software-defined vehicles use software platforms for functions that were earlier controlled mainly by mechanical or standalone electronic systems.
Industry Context
Automotive semiconductors are used in electric vehicles, connected cars, autonomous driving systems, and advanced safety systems. Semiconductor ecosystem players include chip designers, fabrication firms, testing companies, and electronic design service providers.
