The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, signed an agreement on 24 September 2026 with Bengaluru-based GalaxEye Space Solutions Private Limited. The agreement provides financial support of ₹63.84 crore under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund for a project with a total approved cost of ₹247.69 crore.
Technology Development Board and RDI Fund
The Technology Development Board was constituted under the Technology Development Board Act, 1995, and functions under the Department of Science & Technology. The RDI Fund is used for supporting technology development, innovation, and commercialisation in strategic and emerging sectors.
OptoSAR Satellite Technology
The project aims to develop a next-generation multisensor satellite with sub-0.5 metre high-resolution OptoSAR imaging. OptoSAR is a combined imaging system that integrates Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Electro-Optical (EO) sensors in one platform. SAR uses microwave signals and can capture images through clouds and at night, while EO imaging uses reflected light for visual observation.
Project Features and Applications
The project seeks to advance OptoSAR technology from Technology Readiness Level 6 to Technology Readiness Level 9. TRL-6 refers to a system prototype demonstrated in a relevant environment, while TRL-9 refers to an actual system proven in operational use. The multisensor satellite is intended for wide-area surveillance, human detection, vehicle detection, and target classification.
Important Facts for Exams
- The Technology Development Board works under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.
- GalaxEye Space Solutions Private Limited is based in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- Synthetic Aperture Radar can collect data in all weather conditions and during night-time.
- Technology Readiness Level is a nine-level scale used to assess the maturity of a technology.
Space Technology Context
Multisensor satellites combine more than one sensing system on a single spacecraft. Such systems are used in Earth observation, remote sensing, and defence-related monitoring applications. India has developed several space-based remote sensing capabilities through the Indian Space Research Organisation and private sector participation.
The approved project cost is ₹247.69 crore, and the TDB support is ₹63.84 crore. The agreement was signed on 24 September 2026.
