The United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a new security agreement on 22 September 2026 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The pact was signed by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen. It updates the 1951 US-Danish Defence Agreement, which has governed American military access to Greenland for 75 years.
Greenland and Arctic Security
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and lies in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. The island has strategic value for Arctic defence, missile warning systems and military logistics because of its location between North America and Europe.
Key Provisions of the Pact
The agreement permits the United States to modernise and expand activities at the Pituffik Space Base. It also allows the establishment of additional defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The pact grants broad access to Greenland’s airspace and territory and includes provisions for undersea access.
Sovereignty, NATO and Investment Rules
The agreement reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland’s right to self-determination. It also blocks non-NATO and non-EU countries from establishing military installations or making sensitive investments in Greenland without the express approval of the signatories. The clause is linked to concerns about strategic influence in the Arctic.
