The United States Navy awarded a multi-year production contract to RTX subsidiary Raytheon for the Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) interceptor missile on 1 October 2026. The contract is valued at up to $24.4 billion and covers five years with an additional two-year extension option.
Standard Missile-6
The Standard Missile-6 is a multi-role interceptor used by the United States Navy. It can engage aircraft, surface targets, and ballistic missiles, and it forms part of the Navy’s layered air and missile defence architecture.
Contract Structure and Procurement
The agreement is a multi-year production contract, which is a procurement model used for large-scale defence manufacturing. The stated purpose of the contract is to accelerate SM-6 production, maintain a stable supply, and strengthen the defence industrial base.
Related Munitions Replenishment
The procurement is linked to the Department of Defense effort to replenish munitions stockpiles. These stockpiles were partly depleted by conflicts in the Middle East, and the 2026 contract follows other large missile orders placed in the same year.
