Gaana music in Tamil cinema
Deva was known for popularising the gaana style in mainstream Tamil cinema. Gaana is a music form associated particularly with Chennai and is commonly performed in colloquial Tamil. Deva was also known by the sobriquet “Thenisai Thendral”, meaning “breeze of sweet music”. His film compositions include songs and scores associated with titles such as Annamalai and Baashha. These films are among the works linked to his career as a composer. The music for Tamil films forms part of a wider Indian film-music tradition in which composers create material for screen performances and soundtrack releases.
