Astronomers Detect Magnetic Threads Above the Sun

Astronomers detected fine, thread-like magnetic structures in the chromosphere above a quiet region of the Sun using the Sunrise-III solar observatory. An international research collective, headed by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), released these discoveries in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on October 24, 2026.

Solar Atmosphere and Magnetic Canopy

The solar atmosphere has three principal layers: the photosphere, chromosphere, and corona.
