The Project 18A
Context: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister, accorded in-principle approval to the Indian Navy’s futuristic Project 18A (Next-Generation Destroyer) programme, estimated at approximately ₹80,000 crore.

About The Project 18A:
What it is?
- The Indian Navy’s Next-Generation Destroyer (NGD) capital acquisition program designed to develop heavily armed, large-displacement, stealth guided-missile destroyers that will succeed the Visakhapatnam-class (Project 15B) warships as the navy’s premier surface strike platforms.
Organisation: Conceptualized and designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house Warship Design Bureau (WDB) under the Ministry of Defence.
Aim: To construct futuristic, multi-role surface combatants equipped with deep-strike land attack, integrated air defense, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, preserving naval dominance and surface combat fleet strength across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Key Features of Project 18A:
- Larger Displacement & Stealth Design: Envisages 10,000–13,000-tonne destroyers, larger than the Visakhapatnam class, incorporating advanced stealth features and integrated electric propulsion systems.
- High Indigenous Content: Targets approximately 75% indigenous components, including hull construction, electronics and weapons, supporting Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
- Advanced Missile Launching Systems: Proposed to accommodate up to 144 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells for BrahMos missiles, long-range land-attack missiles and air defence interceptors.
- Next-Generation Radar Systems: Envisages indigenous AESA radars and integrated combat management systems to improve detection and tracking of aerial, surface and emerging missile threats.
- Anti-Submarine Warfare Capabilities: Proposed to integrate advanced sonar systems, SMART missiles and Varunastra torpedoes, strengthening detection and engagement of hostile submarines.
Significance:
- Enhances India’s blue-water naval capabilities to counter expanding Chinese naval deployments and regional submarine threats in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
- Supports the replacement of ageing destroyers with advanced indigenous warships, strengthening long-term fleet readiness and India’s maritime security.
