Context: Coal India Limited (CIL) celebrated its 51st Foundation Day on November 1, 2026, achieving record-breaking monthly coal production, supply and railway evacuation during October 2026, strengthening India’s energy security.

About Coal India’s 51st Foundation Day and Record Performance:
What is it?
- Coal India Limited (CIL) is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Coal and India’s largest coal-producing company.
- Established: November 1, 1975, following the restructuring and nationalisation of India’s coal industry.
- Role: Ensures reliable domestic coal production and supply, particularly for thermal power generation and industrial requirements.
Key Findings and Records:
- Record Monthly Coal Supply: Achieved its highest-ever monthly coal supply of 70.3 million tonnes (MT) in October 2026, surpassing 69.4 MT in March 2026, with 19% year-on-year growth.
- Record Power Sector Supply: Supplied 57.1 MT of coal to the power sector, exceeding the previous record of 56.5 MT in May 2024, registering 19% annual growth.
- Highest Monthly Coal Production: Produced 67.2 MT of coal in October 2026, surpassing the earlier October record of 62.47 MT in 2024, with 19% year-on-year growth.
- Record Railway Coal Evacuation: Achieved 310 railway rakes per day for power-sector coal transportation, exceeding the previous record of 302.8 rakes per day in March 2025.
- Long-Term Production Growth: Annual production increased from 79 MT in 1975–76 to 768 MT in FY 2025–26, with a production target of 815 MT for FY 2026–27.
Significance:
- Higher domestic coal production ensures reliable fuel availability for thermal power plants, supporting electricity generation and reducing dependence on coal imports.
- Record railway rake loading strengthens coal evacuation infrastructure, reducing transportation bottlenecks and ensuring timely supplies to power plants.
