Japan’s ‘Polka Dot Queen’ Yayoi Kusama Dies at 97

Yayoi Kusama was a Japanese avant-garde artist born on 22 March 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan. She died on 14 August 2026 at a hospital in Tokyo at the age of 97, and her company, Yayoi Kusama Inc., announced her death on 27 August 2026.

Uttar Pradesh completed the physical demarcation of the 700-kilometre Ganga River floodplain zone across 13 districts from Unnao to Ballia. The boundary work was marked on the ground with 7,350 pillars, and the status was placed before the National Green Tribunal in August 2026.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines signed a final contract in Bengaluru on 26 August 2026 to develop and produce a new high-power turboshaft engine for 13-tonne helicopters. The agreement was signed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL), a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines.

India Plans 100 New Ships to Cut Freight Bill

India plans to add 100 new vessels to its merchant fleet over the next five years to reduce dependence on foreign shipping lines for carrying critical cargo such as crude oil, gas, coal and urea. The announcement was made on 25 August 2026 at the inaugural Sagar Samvad conference in New Delhi, which was organised by the National Shipping Board to discuss policy directions for Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
