Trump Announces US Control of Venezuelan Oil Reserves

The United States and Venezuela announced a major oil agreement on 28 August 2026 involving more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves. The arrangement was linked to a private joint venture, a 100-year concession, and a reported U.S. majority stake of 55% through equity and access to oil at cost.

Flood Risk Rises in Nepal After Glacial Lake Overflow

A landslide-dammed lake near the Nepal-Tibet border overflowed on 28 August 2026 after a massive glacial collapse on 26 August 2026 triggered flash floods and landslides in the border region. The lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers and was estimated at about 2 million cubic metres.

Trump Signs Order to Rename Lake Ontario

On 27 August 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”. The order instructed the United States Department of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information System within 30 days and required federal agencies to use the new name on maps and documents.
